Twenty days of the Death

Beslan: This is a synonym to the word “death”. It is a synonym to the word “nightmare”. I am the father of a 5-year-old boy and although I live hundreds of miles away from Beslan, I am very frightened. The equation “school” = “death” makes me feel depressed and mentally exhausted. I can do nothing.

It is impossible to explain.  Complete weakness of the army and police. Children died. Flowers brought by the children for the first day of school, remained lying near the school walls. So did the children: absolutely innocent schoolchildren.

For the Dudiev family of Beslan, September 1st started with a bit unusual but definitely happy occasion: 16-year-old Soslan went to the first day of school with his sister – a first-grader. Their mother went with them too. However, the Day of Knowledge turned out, for them and for the whole country a day of terrible tragedy. Six-year-old Iza was killed by the terrorists, her brother, Soslan, is still missing and their mother is in the hospital with multiple fragmentation wounds. This is just one family, only one example. Fathers bury their hopes; mothers mourn over their dearest.

Although the government gives promises that all the families like the Dudievs will be financially supported, it is unknown when. In Beslan you can meet people from all over the Russian Federation. Everyone comes with only one aim: to help. As a representative of Children’s Hope International in Tomsk, Russia, I went to Beslan. Our goal was to provide real help and support. Help to those who stayed alive and express condolences to the bereaved families.

Money from families in the USA, Canada, Mexico  - from all over the world, have been donated to CHI’s “Russian School Tragedy Fund”. We provided support to 10 families, in which children were killed or suffered in the terrorist attack at School #1. But what turned out to be the most important was not the financial assistance but CHI’s moral support.

Think about it. Although 50 rubles will help not even 500-thousand rubles is a substitute for your child’s life! No, no, and again no. No amount of money will be able to substitute the incomparable loss. When, you wake up in the morning, you will not hear: “Mom, dad, I am awake!”

We can only admire the courage of Beslan residents. They don’t demand money or other material goods. The parents and relatives of the murdered hostages are thankful to those who could come to the place of tragedy. To those, who shared their endless and limitless sorrow.
