Russian School Tragedy Fund

September, 2004 will forever be remembered as one of the most tragic moments in modern history. Just the mention of Beslan will for many years cause distress and sadness. We are thankful to everyone who has helped the children and their families who became victims of this massacre.

On September 23, Children’s Hope International delivered the first humanitarian help to ten families. The total amount of monetary aid distributed so far is $10,979.50 (as of September 24, the Russian School Tragedy Fund has raised $7125).

At this time we know one of these girls died. One girl is missing and the other girls are injured and patients in various hospitals in the Beslan area. Helping the families of these girls is one of the three ways the entire Children’s Hope family can make a difference.

No words can express the anguish we all feel after watching and reading about the school terrorist attack in Beslan , Russia. Hundreds of children, parents and teachers needlessly died after being held prisoner for almost three days.

How can I help?

What can I do?

Here at Children’s Hope we too asked those questions.

Today we found out that we know several children who were in the attack.

In April of this year, Children’s Hope Foundation helped sponsor 6 girls from Beslan competing
in a fashion theater in
Moscow .  In this “Golden Needle” competition, the girls designed, sewed
and modeled their own clothing. All of the girls from this theater group were part of a fashion show
for the first day of school celebration at the Beslan school. All of them were captured by the terrorists.

Every day we receive updates on the aftermath of the terrible events in Beslan.

September 15th we received confirmation that, tragically, Emma K., the lovely girl in the blue dress in the center of the photo, perished in the siege. Her funeral took place just recently.

Svetlana T. ,with the pink hand fans, and her mother Marina were among the hostages. They were separated from each other during the siege. Marina is still unable to find her daughter. Her father, Svetlana’s grandfather, couldn’t bear the grief and died just a few days ago. These two families need our special help and support.

Alena S. survived the ordeal. She is now recovering in the hospital. But, her grandfather, a former director of this school, perished when he helped the children escape from the shooting and fire.

Madena A. and Kristina T. were among the hostages but survived. They are currently in Beslan in a state of terrible shock.

All of the children performing in the fashion theater as part of the Center of Creative Activities, have suffered from the siege.  They lost  relatives, friends, and fellow students in this massacre. Also the Center’s director Raisa K., the theater’s choreographer, Alyeta G., the director Diana T., and the other girls, Dina A., Arena T., and Alyssa Ts. all need our help.

The Center of Children’s Creative Activities itself was located at the school. Needless to say, everything (sewing machines, over locks, etc.) was lost to the fire, and the Center won’t be able to function in the future.

Our goal is to directly help all these families who suffered from the tragedy and lost their loved ones.

(Note: For privacy reasons, the last names of the people involved in this tragedy are not mentioned here).

Helping the families of these girls is one of the three ways the entire Children’s Hope family can make a difference. “Since CHI is directing this project, we can insure the security of donations,” says Yuriy Kudinov, CHI’s Director of Humanitarian Aid.

1-  Family Assistance: Money would go directly to the families of these fifteen girls to help
with burial, medical, and (with the loss of a parent) living expenses.

2-  Medical Rehabilitation Center: The Federal Minister of Education asked CHI to participate by sponsoring equipment for one-to-two rooms in a medical rehabilitation center that will be set up to treat the needs of the children injured in the school tragedy.

3-  Orphanage Security Devices:  By providing security buttons, telephone connections and fire extinguishers we can help keep the children in orphanages a little more secure.
