"Give Me New Life":
An Update From China

August 6, 2004

On July 12, Lv Ji Mei (from Guiyang Children's Welfare Institute in Guizhou province) flew to Shanghai to receive surgery for congenital heart disease. She was accompanied on her journey by a volunteer from CHI's Hope Foster Care Center in Guiyang.

Also on July 15th, Professor Li Sen Kai (former president of the plastic surgery division of the China Medical Academy) took a group of his students to Baoding SWI in Hubei province. While there, the group provided check-ups for the children in the orphanage, screening several for surgery, and providing recommendations for future medical care.

July 15th was a busy day for the CHI Foundation-China! On that same morning, a trip was made to Langfang Children's Village by the president of Huangsi Plastic Surgical Hospital. The purpose of his visit was to screen children for cleft lip and palate surgeries. Huangsi Hospital has graciously donated the use of their facilities and the expertise of their skilled physicians for these surgeries.

One month ago, 5-year-old Dang Xiao Xing, from LuoYang Children's Welfare Institute, was unable to speak or to walk. Her future looked grim. However, orphanage staff members believed in Xiao Xing's ability to make progress and petitioned CHI Foundation to fund her medical treatment. Sure enough, only two weeks post-surgery, this little girl has made tremendous advances! She has gained weight and can now walk (with support). She has more facial expressions than before, including a sweet smile. Everyone who has watched this transformation has been encouraged and touched. Many thanks to all the hospital staff who have worked so hard to care for Xiao Xing! We are particularly grateful to her surgeon, Zhang Jia Yong, who has gone far above and beyond the call of duty in his desire to help the orphans of China.

Thirty orphans from Inner Mongolia and Anhui province traveled to Beijing for a week in July for a summer camp, sponsored by CHI Foundation. The children visited the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, Jingshan Park, and the Luxun Museum, and also spent time at the Beijing Zoo, Sea World, and the Science Museum. The purpose of the week-long excursion was to broaden the horizons of these orphans, all of whom had never before traveled outside of their town's borders.

On July 21st, Gong Xuan Xuan arrived in Beijing for surgery in Dongzhimen Hospital. This little girl was found begging in the streets of Taikang county (Henan province) several weeks ago. Since her rescue, much media attention has been focused upon Xuan Xuan. Many people have offered encouragement and support as she receives medical treatment and attempts to return to a normal life.

On July 22, Dang Kai Shi (from Taiyuan Children's Welfare Institute in Shanxi province) was discharged from the hospital after surgery to remove a tumor on her spine.

Seven children from the Li Ming Family foster home in Hebei province recently traveled to Beijing for surgery. Their ailments ranged from congenital heart disease to rachiokyphosis (curvature of the spine). All seven are teenagers and have been waiting for medical treatment for a long time. Thanks to the team of doctors and nurses who handled their care, they may now move forward with their lives.
