"Give Me New Life" Update: May 7, 2004 · On April 22nd, a group of Beijing orphans who had heart surgery last year went to Beijing Fuwai Cardiological Hospital for their post-surgery check-ups. April 23rd, Mr. Li Li Guo, the vice-minister of the Ministry of Civil
Affairs Administration, presided over a meeting about the medical campaign
“For the disabled and orphans’ tomorrow.” The purpose of the meeting was
to discuss the campaign and possible alterations to it. Representatives of
Children’s Hope International presented at the meeting on behalf of the Social
Work Association. · The staff of Children’s Welfare Foundation, together with
medical experts from Beijing Dongzhimen Hospital, went to visit Gong Xuan Xuan
and two other children at the Guangzhou Aid and Rescue Station. Upon
examination, it was found that, because of their disabilities, the two others
would not benefit from surgery. Gong Xuan Xuan, however, may improve after a
series of surgeries.
Gong Xuan Xuan Gong Xiao Zhi · On April 26th, the British association of Social Work and Care for Children hosted a foster care training seminar in Beijing. The British foster program has completed a set of training materials under the leadership and instruction of the Ministry of Civil Affairs Administration. The teaching material is supposed to serve as the guideline and model for foster care in the country. Present at the meeting were more than 20 directors from different institutions all over the country as well as authorities from each pro · On April 22nd, Dang Hai Chao from Henan province was discharged from the Beijing Univeristy Hospital. Born in 2001, he suffered from rachiokyphosis, a humpbacked curvature of the spine. Before the surgery, the boy was quiet, lonely, and slow in reaction. After the surgery, however, he has become much more active, and now loves talking and laughing. Dang Hai Chao was well taken care of in the hospital and the surgery proved to be successful. He has recovered and is now back in the Luoyang Institute.

April 26th, Dang Yun Jie and Dang Yun Shu, both from Yuncheng, Shanxi,
were hospitalized at No. 301 PLA Hospital and Dongzhimen Hospital for club foot
and cleft lip, respectively.
· On April 28th, four children from Luoyang, Henan, were discharged after their surgeries for cerebral palsy. Because they were supposed to lie on their backs for some time after the surgery, it became somewhat of a problem to transport them to the railway station. However, the staff of the hospital was able to work together with the orphanage to ensure a safe trip back to Luoyang for the children.
