“Giving Me New Life” Foundation Update (10th
Edition)
· On March 6, Dang Shantian, a two-year-old baby boy with testicular cancer left the hospital following surgery. He is now in foster care at the Lang Fang Children’s Village. · On March 22, Jianyang visited Baotou SWI Inner Mongolia to meet with 12 special-needs children. The visit allowed Jianyang to learn more about their diseases so that we can arrange surgeries in the future. · On March 22, Shen Qingxiang arrived in Lang Fang Children’s Village for foster care following his heart surgery. · On March 27, the first five kids with Cerebral Palsy, from Henan Luoyang SWI, went to Beijing Dongzhimen Hospital for their surgeries. It’s the beginning of the “Medical Aid Program on Cerebral Palsy and Extremity Deformity.” This program depends on the cooperation between CHI Foundation and doctors under the leadership of Dr. Xu Lin. Despite the lack of beds available patients, Dongzhimen Hospital set aside a room—nicknamed the “Loving Room”—for these special children and their nurses. · On April 2, three special-needs children from Baotou SWI went to Dongzhimen Hospital in Beijing for their surgeries. Two children received treatment for Spinal Meningocele, a neural tube defect, while another suffered from coax-arthrosis (hip) dislocation. · On the morning of April 3, employees from a company came to the Qi Miao Shangshou foster care home to look in on the orphans. These children are from different orphanages around China, and had previously received surgeries. The employees gave cookies and bananas to the children. The group also donated $106 (847.5 RMB) to the foster care home. All of the children and guest had a wonderful time. · On April 3, one child went to Dongzhimen Hospital for treatment. Another child, suffering from Spinal Meningocele, arrived at First Affiliated Hospital of Beijing University. Many children with this disease cannot be cured at a local hospital, and therefore must be transferred to Beijing. · Also on April 3, “Zhang Depei Benefit Evening” was held in the Jingguang Center by the Chinese Benefit Committee, the Philip Hayden Foundation and the U.K. “Care for Children.” Zhang Depei is a tennis player in the United States. · During the first quarter 2004, 29 surgeries have been completed, including, 10 lip and cleft palate repairs and 11 heart disease surgeries. The total costs were $56,908.86 (455,270.89 RMB). CHI Foundation sponsored $40,238.34 (321,906.72 RMB) of the costs, and another $1,064.41 (8,515.25 RMB) was donated by caring individuals in China. Eleven children have received surgeries in Beijing, and another 18 in their local hospitals. · We received a total of $5,626 (45,008 RMB) in donations within China during the first quarter of 2004. The donations were used for medical aid programs and for special-needs orphans. · The Ministry of Civil Affairs has set up a medical aid office to implement the “Tomorrow’s Plan for Special Needs Orphans’ Surgeries and Healing” program. The program will be headed by the Chinese Benefits Committee, China Adoption Center and the China Association of Social Work. We will also participate in the work of the program as a representative of the China Association of Social Work. The representative has already been determined, and the standing body was set up in the China Adoption Center.
